Malaysia Airlines was initially born as Malayan Airways Limited in October 1937, through a joint initiative between the Ocean Steamship Company of Liverpool, the Straits Steamship of Singapore and Imperial Airways which led to a proposal to the Colonial Straits Settlement government to run an air service between Penang and Singapore. In April 1947, MAL took to the skies with its first commercial flight as the national airline. Malaysia Airlines Limited was created some years later, in 1963 and in 1965, with the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, Malaysian Airlines Limited became a bi-national airline being renamed Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA). The airline demonstrated positive signs of growth when a new logo was introduced as well as new services to Perth, Taipei, Rome and London. In 1972, however the partners went separate ways and Malaysia introduced Malaysian Airline Limited, subsequently renamed as Malaysian Airline System, taking to the skies in October of the same year. Branded as Malaysia Airlines, the airline continues to operate as the country’s national flag carrier and in 2013 became a fully-fledged member of oneworld alliance. This agreement has connected the airline to some 850 destinations in 150 countries across the oneworld alliance network. Malaysian Airlines are headquartered in Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Selangor, Greater Kuala Lumpur, and operate flights out of its main hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and from its secondary hubs in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching to destinations throughout Asia as well as some destinations in Europe and Oceania. The airline was renationlised in August 2014 when the Malaysian government's sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional, which already owned 69.37% of the airline, announced its intention to purchase remaining ownership from minority shareholders and remove the airline from Malaysia's stock exchange. Malaysia Airlines holds a lengthy record of excellent service, having received more than 100 awards over the last decade.

Malaysia Airlines is considering a "modular product model" says the carrier's new CEO, with an aim of offering better value to passengers and drive up sales. The fact that the airline does not have a premium economy product means that there is a large difference in price between its premium offering and its lowest travel class. By offering customers the possibility of flying in business without the additional "frills" like lounge access, extra checked baggage or mileage accrual, MAS would be able to to reduce the cost of business class, at the same time as opening up the premium cabin to those that were previously priced out of it. MAY 2015 Malaysia Airlines announced they are to undergo a complete overhaul as it restructures a new company, with a rebranding that will be unveiled next week and changes planned to its fleet and network strategies. Malaysia Airlines has seen successive years of losses, have suffered huge damage to its brand when flight MH370, disappeared in March last year, in what is now one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history. Analysts say that apart from the brand, the key to a revival will be their ability to reduce costs, deploy capacity more efficiently, and create a profitable network that takes advantage of Kuala Lumpur's position as a regional hub.
