Indonesia AirAsia is a low-cost airline based in Tangerang, Indonesia. The airline was established as Awair (Air Wagon International) in 1999 by the former chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Muslim organisation, Abdurrahman Wahid. After being elected president of Indonesia in 1999, he decided to relinquish his 40% stake in the business. Although the airline began operations with Airbus 300/310 aircraft in 2000, all flights were then suspended until 2002. As Awair, in 2004, the airline began operating domestic flights within Indonesia as an associate of AirAsia. Today the airline is known as Indonesia AirAsia and operates both scheduled domestic and international flight services. The airline's main base is situated at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta and is an Indonesian associate carrier of Malaysian low-fare airline AirAsia. Indonesia Air Asia, along with several other Indonesian airlines, was banned from flying into Europe airspace due to safety concerns until July 2010, when the ban was lifted. Today Indonesia AirAsia is listed in category 1 for airline safety quality, by Indonesian Civil Aviation Authority. The airline employs more than 2,000 employees in 2013.
