United Airlines realizes that at times it may be necessary to travel with an item that exceeds the size or weight limitations or is in excess of the baggage allowance. Additional charges apply to this type of baggage.

Any piece over the baggage allowance or baggage that exceeds the size and/or weight limitations will be subject to additional charges. Excess baggage is transported on a space-available basis and will be carried subject to load capacities of the aircraft. Other restrictions may apply.

Baggage in excess of 100 pounds (45 kilograms) or 115 linear inches (292 cm)(total length + width + height) will not be accepted as checked baggage.

Customers who travel with checked baggage in excess of the baggage allowance will be required to pay a service charge per bag or item, based on the itinerary.

Certain customers are exempt from paying checked baggage service charges for one or more bags within specified size and weight limits. Customers traveling with MileagePlus Premier Members or dependents traveling with active U.S. military personnel will have the same exemption as the customer whose status provides for the benefit, as long as they are traveling on the same reservation. This exemption will not apply to group reservations including 10 or more customers or when the flight is not operated by United or United Express®.

Assistive devices, including electric wheelchairs weighing more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), will continue to be accepted at no charge.

Check In Procedure

For flights within the U.S., as well as most international flights, baggage will generally not be accepted for check-in more than four hours before scheduled flight departure, although this policy varies by airport and based on daily check-in counter hours.

United has the right to cancel reservations, deny boarding and refuse the acceptance of checked baggage of any customer who does not meet the applicable check-in time limit.

Check-in is available starting 24 hours prior to scheduled departure.
